Knitting to save lives

Each year I organise the WelHats project to help people in need. This community-based knitting campaign donates an array of homemade winter clothes to very worthy causes. In the past we have provided warmth to our brave soldiers serving in Afghanistan. This year we will be providing that life-saving support to those caught up in the tragic ongoing Syrian conflict.

We typically knit and donate 3,000 items of warm clothing. But the need is great and this year we will be trying to better that record. The Syrian winter is particularly vicious, yet this is where the largest number of forcibly displaced people anywhere in the world will be this winter – with 40% of the total population forced to survive outdoors in the midst of a war zone.

We will be working with the UK registered charity “Hand in Hand with Syria” once again. This is where you (or perhaps someone you know) can help. I am asking for the residents of Welwyn Hatfield to get involved by knitting, hats, gloves, scarfs and especially blankets so that we can send them to Syrian families in desperate need of help.

We will be accepting knitted goods, such as gloves, socks, scarves, and blankets. We can also accept donations of shop bought items, but sadly due to custom rules, we are unable to accept second hand garments. If you’d like to contribute, you can send or drop your items off at my local constituency office: Maynard House, The Common, Hatfield, Herts AL10 0NF

We are aiming to send out our first shipment just after Friday 4th November. So far we have already received around 300 items, before we even officially launched the campaign. Each and every hat, sock and blanket will help a vulnerable person.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reply to this email or contact my agent Paul Wells on 01707 262 632 or by email at

I hope you have a pleasant summer.

P.S. Working together we can bring a smile to Syrian families caught up in this conflict whilst helping to reduce the need for people to travel further from their homes to get help. Put simple, we can help save lives from right here at home in Welwyn Hatfield. Thank you for your help.
