Mike vowed to ‘give something back’ and started volunteering

I am a retired HR Director who moved to WGC from the Midlands some 10 years ago.

Unfortunately two years later I was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer and underwent major treatment at the Lister Hospital, over a period of three years. Thankfully I survived and was declared clear as a consequence of the brilliant treatment I received from the NHS.

I vowed then to ‘give something back’ and that’s when I learned about the Welwyn Hatfield Community and Voluntary Services; I have been driving on the Community Car Scheme two days of the week ever since.

I really enjoy it because you can determine how much time you put in. I meet some remarkable people, many of whom have difficult conditions to deal with and yet they get on with life with so much grit and determination; it’s a great pleasure to meet them and to be able to help.

It also makes you appreciate how important it is to support others less fortunate than you and how important the service is to them, which is provided with the support of the team at Welwyn Hatfield CVS.
