Our October Black History Month Pop-Up Market and Workshops Weekend in partnership with Hatfield Cultural Connection and held at The Galleria, was a weekend not to be forgotten. The local community and beyond came to celebrate Black heritage, support small businesses, connect with services and network. From lively performances to inspiring exhibitions and interactive spaces, the event saw an enthusiastic turnout, and the feedback from both attendees and participating businesses and services has been overwhelmingly positive. The public’s eagerness for future events only adds to the excitement and plans for next year are already being discussed. Here’s why our event was so successful…
Highlight: A Surprise Visit from Nurses and Midwives Featured in the Strength in Service Exhibition
A memorable moment during the weekend was the attendance of medical professionals who were featured in our Strength in Service exhibition, which honoured Black healthcare workers from Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire and their invaluable contributions. They were surprised to see each other and spent time sharing memories and experiences, bonding over their careers. Witnessing them read each other’s stories and reflect on their journeys was touching. Other nurses in attendance expressed their gratitude for the spotlight on their profession and on their peers, underlining the importance of honouring those who serve our communities selflessly regardless of what adversities they faced.
Express Yourself Wall: Creativity and Inspiration from Young Minds
The Express Yourself wall was an absolute highlight for children at the event. Designed as a space where kids could share their thoughts on kindness, self-love, and creativity, the wall quickly became a colourful mosaic of heartfelt messages. From drawings and affirmations to personal dreams, every inch of the wall was filled each day, creating a piece of art that that positivity resonated with visitors of all ages. Watching the children take full ownership of the space was incredibly moving, and the response was everything we’d hoped for – a safe, welcoming area where they could freely express themselves.
Interactive and Creative Workshops for Children
The event also featured interactive and creative workshops where children and young people had the chance to learn a new skill or simply have fun. They could try their hand at hair braiding, experiment with gel printing, or enjoy creating tasty treats. It was wonderful to see so many young people fully engaged, away from technology, and immersed in hands-on activities. The workshops were not only fun but also educational, providing insights into new skills and creative expression. The enthusiasm and joy on the children’s faces were a testament to the impact of these activities.
Health Checks with the Resident Doctor: A Timely and Appreciated Service
Adding a practical and appreciated touch to the event, the resident doctor offered free health checks and consultations to visitors. With the difficulty of securing GP appointments, attendees found this service invaluable. The relaxed setting allowed them to discuss general health concerns without feeling rushed, and the doctor’s genuine interest in their wellbeing made an impact. Many visitors appreciated this addition, which aligned perfectly with our event’s community-centred and health focus element.
Entertainment that Brought the Crowd to Life
Our lineup of entertainment truly made an unforgettable impact on the event. Passing trade and visitors to the event enjoyed the steel band, with attendees dancing to the lively rhythms. African drummers and dancers captivated the crowd with their powerful beats and outstanding performance. They provided more interactive experiences, as by invited members of the audience to join in – they wowed the audience.
And, of course, Magician Trixy was a standout! He kept both children and parents entertained with his high-energy act. His ability to engage everyone, brought smiles and laughter, making him a clear favourite and a key element of the weekend.
Small Business Support: Returning and New Vendors
We were delighted to have the continued support of small businesses that participated in last year’s event. These returning vendors were amazed by how much the event had grown—not only in terms of the larger venue, but also the expanded team, exciting lineup, and extensive advertising. After speaking with their customers, vendors shared that people had travelled from as far as Oxford, Cambridge, Birmingham, London and Kent to attend, which made them feel honoured to be involved.
In addition to the returning businesses, we welcomed new vendors who embraced the opportunity to connect with new clientele. They expressed their gratitude for being included in such a homely event and appreciated the exposure this platform provided for their brands. We were privileged to have both returning and new businesses join us, each contributing to a diversity of products and experiences available for attendees.
Supporting a Good Cause: Raising Funds for Endometriosis UK
Another achievement during the weekend was raising £215 for Endometriosis UK which is up on total in 2023. The organisation joined us for half a day on Saturday, and we worked to spread awareness and encourage participation in the raffle, which was generously supported by businesses that donated prizes; in The Galleria – Regatta Great Outdoors, Beauty Outlet, Marks & Spencer’s Outlet, Nando’s, The Baggage Factory, TK Maxx, Pro Cook, The Body Shop, Nipa’s Hair & Beauty and Pure Gym. Also, a local business in Welwyn Garden City, Misya Mezz and in Hatfield, ASDA, The Barbers in Parkhouse Court and Bob’s Family Butchers in Hilltop. Information on the condition was accessible, allowing conversations and donations to continue.
A Celebration of Community, Culture, and Connection
The Black History Month Pop-Up Market and Workshop Weekend offered something for everyone, from the moving exhibitions and interactive spaces to dynamic performances and engaging vendors. The blend of culture, learning, and entertainment created an inspiring environment where people could connect, learn, and celebrate together. With the fantastic turnout and positive feedback, it’s clear that events like this play an invaluable role in creating unity and celebrating diversity.
