This year we decided to run a Christmas competition for children aged between 5 and 10 with our project Love Welwyn Hatfield. Love Welwyn Hatfield is a community clean-up campaign to help improve particular areas that require some TLC.

Litter picking is one of the popular tasks and our community volunteers work hard to keep areas tidy in Welwyn Hatfield. With the increase of recyclable materials making their way onto our streets, we felt we would ask the the children of Welwyn Hatfield to show us adults how the materials from these items can be reused to make Christmas Decorations. After all they are the future generation; preserving the environment and nature is important.

We launched Welwyn Hatfield’s Most Creative Unconventional Festive Decoration at the end of November through our social media and asked their parents to help them create a Christmas decoration using everyday household materials which would otherwise contribute to landfill.

Materials could be lollypop sticks, crisp packets, bubble wrap, bottle tops, cartons, tin cans, cardboard boxes etc; the more unconventional the better and they could create any type of decoration they like big or small.

We were grateful to be supported by these local businesses Hatfield House, The Galleria and the Coop in Hatfield. From Welwyn Garden City, Campus West, Red Indian Restaurant and Misya Meze and Grill Restaurant. They understand the importance of teamwork, community involvement and giving at Christmas; they donated fantastic prize which the children will enjoy.
